Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) was set up to help ensure safety and to reduce the number of accidents caused by large trucks, 18 wheelers, semis, and tractor trailers.  The administration has put forth regulations for commercial vehicles in order to prevent accidents, injuries and death caused by or involving these vehicles.  Despite the preventative actions taken by the FMCSA and their efforts to minimize dangerous conditions, a study conducted in early 2009 showed that virtually every commercial trucking company in the United States was in violation of at least one of the FMCSA regulations.

Violating federal regulations could, in many cases, result in very serious accidents involving injury,  property damage and even death.  For example, if a large commercial vehicle is loaded over the approved weight limit, it can be that much more difficult for the driver to maneuver in inclement weather or dangerous situations.  Additionally, a large truck already has a much longer "brake time" than a smaller vehicle.  With an over-regulation load, braking can be that much more difficult.

If you or a loved one has been injured in an accident with a commercial vehicle that you believe was caused by negligence or violation of the regulations set forth by the FMCSA, it is very important that you speak with an experienced St. Louis truck accident lawyer.  The sooner you are aware of your rights, the sooner you could be able to take the necessary steps to recover monetary compensation for your injuries, property damage and non-financial losses such as pain, suffering and loss of enjoyment of life.
